THE Bhalachandra MATHA (Ashrama)
The Bhalachandra Maharaj Ashtama at Kankavli is one of the holy, spiritual places in the District Sindhudurg. There is the holy shrine of Bhalachandra Baba who resided at Kankavli for 30 years and spent his life in penance and ascetic practices. People got rid of their troubles and distress, due to the spiritual power of Saint Bhalachandra Maharaj. He observed a vow of silence, but his only existence, his gestures were believed to relieve of the troubles devotees. Bhalachandra Maharaj was born on 8th Jan 1904 and breathed his last on 16th Dec. 1977. Later on his shrine was built in the premises of ashrama. Thousands of devotees visit this holy place, as well as the grand Kashi-Vishweshwar Temple in front of the matha.
There is an alluring water Fall at a village named Savadav in Kankavli Taluka. Being safe for swimming, it is crowded with tourists, especially during rainy season. You can directly let the water pour over your body. The road leading to the spot of the fall is full of curvings and ups and downs, with pleasant greenery all around. You can enjoy bathing and swimming at both sides of the fall. There is a small cave-type space at the stream-side, often used for keeping tiffin – material etc. you can reach this picanick spot by a tar-road Bombay-Goa-Highway (NH-17) either from Otav Fork or from Belane Fork. Distance from Otav – 9km, Distance from Belane- 6km. Nearest Railway Station-Nindgaon.
GOPURI ASHRAM : AGRICULTURAL PROJECT OF KONKAN GANDHI
Gopuri Ashram, at village Wagade (Wakade) near Kankavli was founded by the late Appasaheb Patwardhan, renowned as Konkan Gandhi who purchased uncultivated land and carried out his novel experiments in agriculture and horticulture. He was a man with green fingers who turned the barren land into a farm of vegetables and medicinal plants. He strated Biogas Gobar-gas projects and gave employment to the jobless hands of local youths. He bought the wsted material to the use of agriculture, which proved to be a practical project for the farmers in Konkan-the straineous efforts and method of agriculture was in fact a boon to cultivators of Konkan his asharam received praise and fame on state and national level. Great personalities like India’s first P.M. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Acharya Vinoba Bhave and other prominent leaders were pleased to visit Gopuri Ashram. Tourists interested in the progress of the homeland (India) during post independence period, should make it a point to visit Gopuri Ashram that is indeed a practical model of dignity of labour as well as the agricultural green-land.
The village ozaram is situated just 2km from Talere bazaar place along Mumbai Goa high way (NH17). The lake is brink to brink full of water. It has been created as a result of a project of irrigation department on a rivulet in Ozaram-locality. The lake is surrounded by beautiful cypress trees and other plantation. It looks fascinating especially in rainy season.
